The Orchestra - the project

The Project

The Child Citizen Orchestra is a social project run by the Citizen Child Benefit Association (ABCC). Conceived by Judge Joo Jos Rocha Targino, the program, in operation since 2006 at the Coque community, and since 2014 in Ipojuca city, aims at social improvement of underprivileged children through music. All the kids live in Coque community, one of the most violent in Recife, with one of the lowest Human Development Index of the city.

Currently, the Orchestra supports 360 young people (230 at Coque, 100 in Ipojuca and 30 in Igarassu), aged between six and 21 years. Students receive lessons in string instruments, percussion, music theory, flute and choir, and woodwind instruments - transverse flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon. The program also includes educational, psychological, medical and dental care, digital inclusion classes, providing three meals a day and uniforms.

The teaching technique is the Suzuki Method, created by Japanese professor Shinichi Suzuki, which provides learning through play - children learn while having fun. The Orchestra also ensures the professionalization of students through the Training School of Luthier Archetier, where students learn the art of building and repairing stringed instruments.

Students stay in the project for a period of five hours, from 7:30 am until 6:30 pm. Amongst the extracurricular activities offered are courses in partnership with universities, and exchange programs, that benefits the best students. The Orchestra has sent students to study music in Poland, Austria, Czech Republic, Germany and Mexico.

The Child Citizen Orchestra has become, year after year, an exemplary social program. The group has received more than 20 awards, including the Best Practices in Local Management, granted by Caixa Econmica, a Nationwide Award. Internationally, the United Nations chose the Orchestra as a good practice of social inclusion, in December 2010.
